COURTICE -- S.T. Worden Public School, located on Nash Road, is out to produce not only top scholars but aims as well to emphasize character education.
The JK to Grade 8 facility, which has a student population of 372 this year, has a comprehensive list of programs it operates through the Kawartha Pine Ridge Board of Education, designed to help students make important life choices.
Through the use of Kelso's Choices and Be Cool, young students learn to deal with the problem of bullying.
Grade 3 students are taught a five-session swimming program, assuring all youngsters get some familiarity with learning to swim.
Grade 5 students participate in the Clarington Racing Against Drugs program, which, along with the Grade 6 VIP (Values Influences Peers) program, is operated with the welcome assistance of the Durham Regional Police. Important aspects of respect and health are emphasized.
The school's peer mediator program helps students solve problems in an atmosphere which encourages respect and dignity.
Students also get involved in raising money each year in the school's annual Terry Fox Run. It's a key element of coming back to school. And they also have many different opportunities to volunteer as members of student council, as office secretaries, library and kindergarten helpers. Students of the month are recognized in assemblies.
In academics, S.T. Worden uses a multi-phase approach to tackle important ongoing issues.
With Foundations, teachers from kindergarten to Grade 6 focus on the teaching of mathematics in their classrooms.
A proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Education to try to enhance the literacy of boys throughout the school.
The school also uses Smartboard Technology with three interactive whiteboards throughout the school to help to highlight student achievement.
