S.T. Worden emphasizes respect, courage

COURTICE -- At S.T. Worden Public School, we are truly 'Howling For Success.' We use respect, fairness, optimism, responsibility, initiative, honesty, perseverance, empathy and courage to help us become the best we can be on a daily basis. These are some of the qualities that remind me of my school motto.

Respect is something you don't come by every day -- you earn it. For example, in our school we have peer mediators. That is where a student is taught to help solve problems for others with respect and dignity.

Fairness can be shown in the simplest of ways. In Mr. Duval's Grade 7 class we all had turns learning how the Smart Board works. Everyone participated equally.

Now, one of the big fundraisers we do every year is the Terry Fox Run. We show optimism in everyone by walking to raise money to find a cure for cancer.

There are many opportunities to be a leader at S.T. Worden. These leaders take charge and show initiative. We have student library helpers, lunch lady helpers and announcers. These are just a few of the leaders.

Honesty is a quality we want in our friendships. It helps us rely and trust each other in the classroom and outside.

Perseverance is one quality that stands out to me because at S.T. Worden we strive to be the best we can at school sports, on school trips and in our daily work. We may not win many championships, but we celebrate by being good sports.

In the future, S.T. Worden students will remember the motto and keep on doing the best they can.

COURTICE -- S.T. Worden Public School, located on Nash Road, is out to produce not only top scholars but aims as well to emphasize character education.

The JK to Grade 8 facility, which has a student population of 372 this year, has a comprehensive list of programs it operates through the Kawartha Pine Ridge Board of Education, designed to help students make important life choices.

Through the use of Kelso's Choices and Be Cool, young students learn to deal with the problem of bullying.

Grade 3 students are taught a five-session swimming program, assuring all youngsters get some familiarity with learning to swim.

Grade 5 students participate in the Clarington Racing Against Drugs program, which, along with the Grade 6 VIP (Values Influences Peers) program, is operated with the welcome assistance of the Durham Regional Police. Important aspects of respect and health are emphasized.

The school's peer mediator program helps students solve problems in an atmosphere which encourages respect and dignity.

Students also get involved in raising money each year in the school's annual Terry Fox Run. It's a key element of coming back to school. And they also have many different opportunities to volunteer as members of student council, as office secretaries, library and kindergarten helpers. Students of the month are recognized in assemblies.

In academics, S.T. Worden uses a multi-phase approach to tackle important ongoing issues.

With Foundations, teachers from kindergarten to Grade 6 focus on the teaching of mathematics in their classrooms.

A proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Education to try to enhance the literacy of boys throughout the school.

The school also uses Smartboard Technology with three interactive whiteboards throughout the school to help to highlight student achievement.
